I am a consultant anaesthetist at Waikato Hospital in Hamilton, New Zealand, with a main clinical interest in anaesthesia for childbirth, where I work as part of the Women’s Health team. I have been practising anaesthetics for about 25 years. My other interests are in teaching and medical writing. I am one of the course coordinators for the Waikato Hospital Part 1 FANZCA Course. I do a lot of other medical teaching, both in-house (at PROMPT, the epidural study day, the ECT study day, and a few others) and outside (I’ve been invited to speak at the University of Waikato and at Wintec).
I am a former Chair of the National Obstetric Anaesthesia (NOA) Network.
I graduated as a doctor in 1996 and trained as an anaesthetist predominantly in the Edinburgh region. I worked for three years as a consultant anaesthetist in the UK, at St. John’s Hospital in Livingston, before moving to New Zealand in 2010. I was admitted as a Fellow of the Royal College of Anaesthetists in 2002, and the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists in 2011. I also have a BSc (Hons) degree in Anatomy.
My first book, a lay person’s introduction to anaesthesia, entitled Anaesthesia: A Very Short Introduction, was published by Oxford University Press in May 2012. I am also one of the editors of the Oxford Handbook of Anaesthesia.

Wow Aiden – most impressive! Thank you for giving us your website this morning when we were in for Stewart’s pre admission – just wish you were doing the anaesthesia yourself! Thank you for pointing out the link to your article on your visit to the equine surgery – our lovely daughter Kate will be very interested as she spent many years in a top equine practice in Newmarket UK – and I will certainly read some of your publications.
By the way, please pass on our delight at the seamless service we received this morning at the Pre Admission clinic. It was like a well oiled machine, everyone was extremely kind, helpful and reassuring and we were well impressed.
Thank you again
Elizabeth Mitchell
